30 brilliant brains came together at The Refillution Hackathon, armed with a load of post-it notes, and unlimited coffee to tackle 3 key challenges from The Refill Report
📌 CHALLENGE 2/3
How can we create SYSTEM CHANGE and accelerate that cultural shift to refilling?
🧐 The Problem
With there being so many different sized bottle necks and openings, adopting a refill machine to fit them all is extremely challenging.
💡 The Idea
Create a movement of standardised refill packaging necks and openings to fit all refill and re-use collection systems. From washing up liquid to pinot grigio, you could have the same refill system to refill different products.
💁🏽 Who’s it for
The system; so that’s brands, manufacturers and supply chain to come together, but ultimately it’s so everyone can refill.
Can you see the idea working?

Instead of reinventing the wheel, why not use a bottle top that’s already in existence? Look at drinks bottles, how many drinks bottles (soft drinks, water, sports drinks etc) use the same specification bottle top, with the same screw top? As long as you used that as the basis of your attachments you could make any custom bottle tops you wanted whilst maintaining universal compatibility – sprays, hoses, dosers, etc.
Also if companies don’t want to adopt that top on their bottles for their ✨aesthetic✨ then they could produce their own adapter instead.
Go for it!
I was told I couldn’t refill a non-Ecover bottle despite the bottle having a clear indication of its volume
Hey Carl, that is disappointing to hear! Can you please send us an email https://www.ecover.com/contact-us/ so we can understand this further. Thank you!
This one would make a real difference.
We agree David! 👊
